Fictitious Life Balance

The most common question that people ask me is ‘How do you do it?

Something you have to keep in mind is that we live in a world of skewed reality. We take on diverse roles at once and we are expected to uphold this ideological sense of control in peer groups, friends, even family. The concept of having it all is a perception. Before you shame me, or send me hate mail for saying this, hear me out – I’m being realistic and not at all negative.
The Universe has a way of balancing itself out, this is something that is beyond our control and it doesn’t include one person, but everyone in the universe. It factors in everyone, and then balances it out; it doesn’t favor one person over the next, or one gender over the other – we are all equals.

Consider the Universe’s balance into your own life. It’s been said that if it’s important to you, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse. The reality is, if your kids are happy and entertained, your home is absolute chaos; and if your kids are miserable and bored, your house is spotless. It’s not about balance; it’s about sacrificing one thing for another.
I think what we need to realize, as a society, is that individuals cannot do it all. The perception is that we can but that it is not anyone’s reality.

The truth is, I don’t do it all. Even though I am a single working mother, I assume the responsibility of the mother and the father, the single woman and the mother, the care giver and the bread winner but I still have my struggles.
My home is a mess, but my work is beautifully laid out and done by deadline. My sheets haven’t been washed in weeks and the laundry is still in the basket, but my monster is well fed and as happy as a pig in shit – so there you go. I DON’T do it all, I prioritize.

I haven’t read a book in months, I haven’t pricked up a paint brush in weeks, and I don’t recall the last time I sat down to sketch –work and being a mom is taking precedency over a hobbies, and that’s OK. The key to balance is not to try to do everything, and to ask for help if and when it is needed.
On that note, I need someone to do my dishes. Any takers?

  1. Well said, Lynne. We let ourselves get pulled in all sorts of directions, but it's time we come realize that it's OK to 'let some things go' for a little while. As someone once said so well, 'our inbox will still be full once we're gone'. So, enjoy life while we can.
